Benefits of a Career in Truck Driving
Truck driving is a challenging and rewarding career that offers many benefits. Here are five reasons why a career in truck driving is worth pursuing:
Competitive Pay: Earn a good salary as a truck driver
Truck drivers are in high demand, and as a result, they earn a competitive salary. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers is $45,260 per year, with the top 10 percent earning more than $72,660 per year. And these numbers are expected to increase with the rise of e-commerce and more goods being delivered.
Flexible Schedule: Balance work and personal life as a truck driver
Truck drivers have the freedom to choose when and where they work. Some choose to work long-distance routes, while others prefer shorter hauls. This flexibility allows truck drivers to balance their work and personal lives in a way that works for them.
Opportunities for Advancement: Career growth in truck driving
As a truck driver, you have the opportunity to advance to higher-paying positions, such as becoming a team leader or a driver trainer. With experience and the right credentials, you can even become a dispatcher or a logistics manager.
Travel and See the Country: Explore different places as a truck driver
One of the best things about being a truck driver is that you get to see different parts of the country. You will experience different cultures and landmarks and will be able to visit places you might not otherwise have the chance to see.
Job Security: The future of truck driving is bright
With the steady growth of e-commerce, there will be a continued need for truck drivers to transport goods across the country. And with the trucking industry expected to grow by 5 percent over the next 10 years, the job prospects for truck drivers are excellent.
Obtaining the Right Licences: LR and HR Licence Training and Assessment
When starting truck driving, one of the most important steps is to get the right Licences and training.
In NSW, There are two main Licence classes for heavy vehicles: Light Rigid (LR) and Heavy Rigid (HR).
LR Licence is for trucks with a GVM of up to 8,000 kgs and it’s the most common type of Licence. An HR Licence is for trucks with a GVM of more than 8,000 kgs and is necessary for operating a prime mover or towing a trailer with more than two axles.
To get an LR Licence, you need to pass a computer-based multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical driving assessment. And for HR Licence, you may require to complete a pre-assessment test and the practical driving assessment, as well as pass an HR Licence medical examination, and pass a computer-based multiple-choice knowledge test
Condition B Removal: Specialized training for operating certain heavy vehicles
In addition, there are specific Licence requirements for operating vehicles with certain types of trailers and a specific class of heavy vehicles known as “Condition B” vehicles.
Condition B vehicles are heavy vehicles that do not meet certain safety standards, and as such, condition B removal training is required to operate these types of vehicles on NSW roads.
