Coach And Bus Driving Licencing Requirements
To drive a bus or coach in Sydney NSW you’ll need two things:
- A driving licence. You’ll need the appropriate driving license for the size of the vehicle. The bus shown in the photo above requires a medium rigid licence. A mini bus may be a LR licence, a normal bus is an MR license and a larger coach is a HR license. At Payless Truck Driving School we can train and licence drivers for all these classes of licence.
- A Bus Driver Authority. This is an additional driver training course required by RMS for drivers of passenger vehicles.

Becoming a Bus Driver Eligibility
In order to be eligible to become a Bus Driver in Sydney NSW, you must:
- Be at least 20 years of age
- Have held an unrestricted Australian Driver’s Licence for at least 12 months in the last 2 years.
- Be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen, permanent resident of Australia
- or hold a visa allowing you to work in Australia
- Pass a medical examination for a commercial driver
After Completing the Bus Driver Authority Training Course
Applicant lodges the following documents with Transport for NSW or Roads and Maritime Services (RMS)
- Driver Authority Application Form, (completed and signed);
- Medical Assessment Form (completed – following medical examination);
- Photocopy of applicant’s driving licence;
Two recent colour photographs (65mmx65mm);
- Non-refundable cheque or money order payable to RMS;
- Proficiency Certificate supplied upon successful completion of the Bus Driver Authority training course.
- Birth Certificate, Passport of Citizenship Certificate
