• Trucks and buses with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) exceeding 8 tonnes and additional axles.
• Additionally, any towed trailer must not exceed 9 tonnes GVM.

• Possess a Class C license, excluding a learner’s permit, or equivalent for a minimum of 365 days. Time spent on a P1 license counts toward this requirement, but you cannot apply to operate an MR vehicle or upgrade to an MR license until you hold a P2 or full Class C license.
• Successfully pass the MR knowledge test.
• Pass a vision test.
• Complete HVCBA successfully or pass a Roads and Maritime driving test.

The Medium Rigid license upgrade is among the most commonly pursued licenses, covering a wide range of trucks and buses. Upon completion of the course, you’ll receive a Class MR license enabling you to operate automatic and synchromesh manual vehicles.

The license may include a ‘condition B,’ permitting you to drive vehicles with automatic and synchromesh gearboxes. However, you won’t be authorized to operate Class MR vehicles with a Road Ranger/Crash gearbox (double clutching method). This limitation is rarely an issue since MR vehicles predominantly feature automatic and synchromesh manual gearboxes. Road Ranger/Crash gearboxes are typically found in higher-class vehicles such as HR, HC, and MC.

This program aims to equip drivers with the fundamental skills, knowledge, and mindset necessary to obtain a Medium Rigid Driver’s License.

• Hold a Class C license (excluding a learner’s license) for a minimum duration of 1 year.
• Complete Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) knowledge test questions.
• Acquire the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) learner’s guidebook and logbook.
• Thoroughly review the HVCBA guidebook before commencing training.

Initially, the Training Course must be completed, which encompasses the criteria listed above. You will be trained and assessed on these criteria, and once you meet the required standard, you will be “signed off.” Upon completion of the Training course, you will need to undertake the Final Competency Assessment, which is a conclusive drive that will be video recorded as per RMS requirements. Following successful completion of the FCA and attainment of the required standard of competency, you will be issued a certification, which the RMS will utilize to issue your MR license.
