14 Feb How to Get HR Licence NSW
Getting a Permit for Heavy Vehicle Licence
You need a license in the required class in order to drive a heavy vehicle HR class licence
Completing the Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) through a Licensed Training Organisation is the primary way to acquire a heavy vehicle licence. You can take a heavy vehicle driving test with the Roads and Maritime Testing Officer in areas where HVCBA is not available.
Low Loader Combination Driving – MC License Required
Roads and Maritime Services advises truck drivers that a Multi Combination (MC) class license is necessary to operate low loaders with low loader dolly combinations.
Can You Use an HR License to Drive a Prime Mover?
Any prime mover or rigid vehicle larger than 8 tons of GVM. It is possible to attach a trailer whose GVM is greater than 9 tonnes and to attach an unladen converter dolly as well. Any vehicle licensed by the HR, MR, LR or C class license may also be driven by holders of an HC class license.
License Classes for Large Vehicles
The groups of heavy vehicle licences issued by Roads and Maritime are shown in this list. Any vehicle class that appears below your license class in the list can be driven, except for motorcycles.
An MC licence is at the highest standard, enabling you to drive all forms of vehicles except motorcycles.
For more specific information about each licensing class, click on the link:
- MC – Multi Mix – B-doubles, prime movers, variations of low loader dollies and low loaders, road trains
- HC – Heavy Mix – Articulated Heavy Vehicles
- HR – Heavy Rigid – Rigid Heavy Trucks or Buses (including articulated buses)
- MR – Medium Rigid – medium rigid trucks or buses, medium rigid
- LR – Light Rigid – tiny trucks or buses
- C – the car
What Do You Need for an HR License to Pass?
Although requirements vary by state, you usually need:
- Keep a license for a vehicle (class C).
- Pass a written exam that will reveal your comprehension of road rules.
- Complete a driving test behind-the-wheel. When parking, stopping, and reversing, this realistic test will determine the ability to drive a heavy vehicle.
- To ensure your safety on the lane, pass an eyesight test.
If you already possess a medium or light rigid licence, depending on your state’s criteria, you might be able to miss the written examination.
Laws of Truck by State
Requirements for HR licences will vary from state to state. Check out the criteria of your state.
What’s the Difference Between a License for HR and HC?
A class licence for Heavy Rigid (HR) is as high as you can go in a rigid vehicle. You can drive trucks and buses over 8 tonnes GVM with three or more axles and a maximum towing weight of 9 tonnes with an HR licence. License holders in this category are given Hino rigid 500 Series models. Again, depending on the transmission method, there are unconditional, A and B classes for this license.
A Heavy Combination (HC) license places you in heavy articulated vehicles with a truck and trailer over 9 tons or a semi-trailer with a single trailer, stepping up from rigids.
How Am I Going to Pass My NSW HR Driving Awareness Test?
Try a random set of questions covering all the DKT parts for your truck licence. All practice questions are multiple choice and will challenge your interpretation of the rules of the road. The actual DKT quiz consists of 45 questions. Or select 20 or 80 from the menu.
Five kinds of truck licenses are available (LR – light rigid, MR – medium rigid, HR – heavy rigid, HC – heavy combination, and MC – multi combination). You would need to keep a car (Class C) license for at least a year for an LR or MR to get a start on your heavy vehicle license, then pass the relevant knowledge exam. You must have kept your car license for at least 2 years if you want to jump straight to an HR licence.
