23 Sep How to get your LR Licence
What will you learn during your LR training and licence?
During your LR Licence training, you’ll be taught everything you need to successfully pass your NSW Light Rigid driving tests. This includes:
- How to safely operate a vehicle
- The right way to switch, reverse, brake, and park a light rigid vehicle
And all the essential skills you need to get a job with your Light Rigid (LR) Licence straight away.
The guide to acquiring your LR Licence is given below:
1. Learn to drive( LR class)
Once you have acquired your C class driver’s licence which is a necessity to apply for an LR licence, you can start to learn to drive Light Rigid (LR class) heavy vehicles. A learner’s permit is not required, however, you must be attended by a supervisor who is either:
- A licenced driving educator that holds an LR or higher class driver’s licence, or
- A person who has held a current LR driver’s licence for as minimum as 4 years.
- As an amateur driver, you must also display L plates and comply with any other situations as required.
2. Complete an application
Once you have your C class licence for at least 12 months you can pertain to upgrading your licence to an LR Licence.
3. Provide proof of your identity
You will be required to provide sufficient proof of your identity for the application as per the law of Australia which requires you to establish your identity on licensing vehicles.
4. Submit the application
Applications for an Australian driver’s licence should be submitted in person at Service NSW You will be asked to provide Completed vehicle licence application form and proof of identity documents as discussed above as well as a required fee.
5. Undertake an eyesight test
All applicants are required to take an eyesight test as we all know that sight is the main element in driving. This will also be conducted at Service NSW when you apply for your licence. If you use any sort of visual aids to pass the eyesight test, your licence will be approved to show that you must wear those aids while you are on the road.
6. Pass the practical driving assessment
Before your licence is issued, you will need to take a practical driving assessment in an LR class vehicle. If you fail your PDA by any chance you will have to take your assessment again after a minimum of 7 days. This is will provide you more time in order to sharpen your practical driving skills and achieve the required driving standard to clear your test and there are no exemptions to this waiting period.
7. Issue of Licence
Once you have cleared your PDA, your licence record will be revised to show that you are now authorised to drive LR class heavy vehicles.
However, a new driver’s licence card will only be handed out when you renew your current licence. You may expect to order a replacement licence that will reflect your updated vehicle class.
What are you eligible to drive after you’ve been issued your LR Licence?
You will have a permit to drive a light rigid vehicle. A 2-axled truck or bus with a GVM that falls between 4.5 tonnes and 8 tonnes. This includes a truck or a bus that provides seating to more than 12 adults including the driver. An LR licence also permits the holder to tow a trailer of less than 9 tonnes GVM. An LR licence is most feasible for people who only need to drive small trucks that fall between 4.5 to 8.5 GVM for example tradies. School teachers as well that are looking to drive school bus for excursions or your guides or operators who need to do guided tours or perform airport transfers.
An LR Licence is a legal requirement for anyone driving a minibus for airports and couriers or small truck, it lets you work as a delivery driver, a removalist or a small courtesy bus driver. If you plan to drive a minibus with additional people on board, you will also need to finish the Bus Driver Authority course. The course will instruct you how to drive safely with passengers on board and how to respond suitably in emergencies.
If your job demands you to unload, offload, and protect goods in your vehicle, you should also keep in mind completing your Load Restraint course. The training introduces basic safety principles to assure safe carriage of loads and results in two Statement of Attainments.
