 What Is MR Licence

An MR licence gives the holder the permission to drive any rigid 2-axle vehicle, including a truck or bus, and to pull a trailer with a weight of no more than 9 tonnes (and within GCM limits). Additionally, a special purpose vehicle with a GVM of less than 15 tonnes can be powered (e.g. tractor or bob-tail prime mover).

Medium rigid licences are among the most widely used license-upgrade choices. It is applied to a range of vehicles, such as trucks and buses. Receiving a class MR licence would grant you the right to drive automatic and synchro manual vehicles.

“Condition B” will be on the licence, enabling you to drive trucks with automatic and synchromesh gearbox, however, you will not be allowed to drive Class MR vehicles with a Road ranger/Crash gearbox (double clutching method). It will not be a drawback as the Road ranger/Crash gearbox (double clutching method) is almost never used in Class MR vehicles.

Students will be eligible to receive their Medium Rigid vehicle licence following the completion of this training and evaluation programme. Formal: Preparation and assessment will take from one day (ten hours) to two days (18 hours) to complete, depending on student competency.

Who Are These Classes Meant For?

A legal requirement for someone who wishes to drive a rigid truck with two axles and a GVM of 8 tonnes or more is a Medium Rigid (MR) licence.

What Should I Do First?

At RMS/Services NSW, the very first step in upgrading your licence is to do the knowledge test. For that part of the process, we will send an email with some helpful links to get you started – fill in the form linked below and we will do the rest.
